Avoid Holiday Scams: Tips for Secure Shopping

Avoid Holiday Scams: Tips for Secure Shopping

The holiday season is a time of joy and cheer (and shopping!)! But unfortunately, it’s also a primary time for fraudsters to target unsuspecting consumers. At Red Rocks Credit Union, we want to ensure your holidays aren’t overshadowed by financial mishaps. Here are our top tips for staying safe while shopping this holiday season.

1. Shop on Secure Websites
Always check that the website you're shopping on uses secure encryption. Look for the padlock symbol in the browser bar and ensure the URL starts with https.//. Avoid shopping on public Wi-Fi networks, as they can expose your personal information to hackers.

2. Beware of Too-Good-to-Be-True Deals

If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Fraudsters often trick unsuspecting consumers with fake discounts or promotions, especially during the holiday season. Stick to reputable retailers and avoid clicking on suspicious links in emails or ads.

3. Protect Your Personal Information

Don’t overshare online. Fraudsters can use seemingly harmless information, like your phone number, to steal your identity. Be mindful of the details you enter on unfamiliar websites or share on social media.

4. Be Cautious with Email Offers

Phishing scams spike during the holidays. Fraudsters send emails pretending to be from legitimate retailers, urging you to click links or provide personal information. Avoid clicking on links from unsolicited emails; instead, visit the retailer’s website directly.

5. Be Mindful of Delivery Scams

With the rise in online shopping comes the rise in delivery scams. Be cautious of emails or text messages claiming issues with your delivery and asking for personal information. Verify directly with the retailer or delivery company.
